Juvenile Law

A "juvenile" is the classification in most states for a person who is under the age of 18. The procedure followed when a juvenile is suspected of violating a criminal statute is very different from that used for adult offenders. While criminal law seeks a balance between punishment and rehabilitation, juvenile law favors rehabilitation. The juvenile criminal justice system presumes that there is a fundamental difference between minors and adults in terms of their level of responsibility and potential for rehabilitation; as such, the primary goal is the successful reintegration of the minor into society, while maintaining overall public safety.
